Australian nursing registration
Explore the general registration steps for internationally qualified nurses seeking to practise in Australia.
Your pathway depends on your qualifications
Understand the process before you apply
Ahpra and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) assess internationally qualified nurses under the applicable pathway. Requirements may differ based on your qualifications, registration history and circumstances.
1. Complete the official self-check
This is the starting point for internationally qualified nurses and midwives.
The self-check helps identify how your qualification may be assessed and what assessment pathway applies. Use the official AHPRA portal; do not rely on third parties to determine your eligibility.
2. Follow the assessment pathway
Complete the assessment stages identified by Ahpra and the NMBA.
Depending on your pathway, you may need qualification assessment, examinations or other evidence. Check current NMBA instructions for accepted qualifications, English-language standards and any applicable streamlined pathways.
3. Prepare your registration application
Submit supporting information through the Ahpra process.
Applications can require proof of identity, qualifications, registration status, English-language evidence, criminal history checks and certified or translated documents. The regulator will specify what applies to you.
4. Meet registration standards
Registration is granted only after the Board's requirements are satisfied.
Ahpra and the NMBA make the decisions on assessment and registration. Confirm all current standards, fees and document requirements directly with them before taking action.
Support to prepare and plan
